Filling in the plot holes.

Merit badge: Swiss cheese holes covered with band-aids and filled with a cork

It’s always nice to come up with an elegant solution, but sometimes you feel like throwing a dragon in there and being done with it.

The result may be less than appetizing, but you earn the “filling in the plot holes” merit badge for getting the job done by any means necessary.

Book + wall.

Merit badge: book being flung against a brick wall

You shouldn’t do it.

You know you shouldn’t do it.

It’s terrible, horrible book abuse.

And yet, with certain books… extra points if you leave a dent.

This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force.

December recaplet.

(That was almost “recapulet” with some messed-up Shakespeare, but I decided to spare you. You’re welcome.)

Happy new year, Badger Scouts!

I’m still replugging all my plugs. (I have a lot of plugs.)

In the meantime, there’s a monthly recap that needs to be gotten out of the way before we can move on to a new year of badges. Short blogging month = short recap, but a couple of my favorite badges so far are in there.

Continue to the recap…

Unplugging.

Merit badge: hand-sewn badge depicting electrical plug

Now is the time for giving the computer a few days’ rest and making lumpy handmade things instead.

Now is the time to completely underestimate how long it will take to hand-stitch a badge for a quick visual joke, resulting in my first completely-missed-it-by-accident blog day ever. Oops. But maybe it doesn’t matter much in the scheme of things, because…

Now is definitely the time for that previously mentioned blogging vacation to start kicking in. Watch for one or two non-badge surprises this week. After that, the Merit Badger blog will take a little nap until the new year.

Now is the time to earn the “unplugging” merit badge.

Thesaurus wrecks.

Merit badge: dinosaur reading from thesaurus-- eat, sup, devour, consume, nom

Wherefore avail oneself of an uncomplicated appellation whereas oneself possesses the ability to behold heavenward an additionally flamboyant linguistic unit?

Translation: Why use a simple word when you can look up a fancier one?

The “thesaurus wrecks” merit badge is for those of you who thought it sounded better the first way. Good luck with that. (Or should I say “irreproachable serendipity”?)

P.S. Thanks once again to Elle. DINOSAURS! RAWR!

Showing & telling.

Merit badge: eyeMerit badge: megaphone with the word TELL on the side

Everybody knows that when you write fiction, you should show and not tell.

Except for the times when you’re supposed to go ahead and tell, because showing wouldn’t be efficient or make sense.

So basically what I’m saying here is: badges for all! Hooray!
