Are you participating in National Novel Writing Month this November? The NaNoWriMo folks offer plenty of official web badges (and even real merit badges!), so the badge above is merely a courtesy for those of you who want a NaNoWriMo badge that matches the others you’ve been collecting.
Speaking of collecting, NaNoWriMo is a great chance to earn some of the writing merit badges that have already been featured here. Here are the top 11* badges to earn while you’re NaNo-ing:
- Word count: Including this is kind of a cheat—win NaNoWriMo, and you’ll actually earn at least 5 of these word count badges.
- Speedy writer: NaNoWriMo and speedy writers are BFFs 4EVA!
- Writing every day: When you’re fighting through a cloud of post-Thanksgiving-dinner drowsiness to get a couple thousand more words down, you’ll understand the true meaning of this badge.
- Easily distracted: You mean to stay focused, you really do, but inevitabl—HEY, LET’S GO WATCH BABY HEDGEHOG VIDEOS!
- Butt in chair, hands on keyboard: No, no more videos. Back to work.
- Flying by the seat of your pants: Because even if you start with an outline, at some point you’re probably gonna have to wing it.
- Flow: I hope you earn the “flow” merit badge instead of this one, anyway.
- Padding: For when you’re out of story at 47,326 words.
- Making deadlines: For when you’ve got 49,998 words at 11:59 pm on November 30th and realize you can still type “The End.”
- Backing up your work: This would be a very bad time to lose your work. Save, save, save!
- Finished first draft: Next stop, NaNoEdMo.
Since we’ve already got the badge thing more or less covered, watch the blog next week for some NaNoWriMo-themed fun that (gasp!) might not involve merit badges. At all. Crazy, right?
ALSO, I feel another Request Week coming on. Look for a post on that very soon.

*Because it’s November.
The “NaNoWriMo” merit badge is part of the merit badges for writers series. The badge may be posted on your site or blog. Tell us why you’ve earned (or will never earn) it in the comments.
