Editing for length.

Merit badge: handsaw cuts a book in half

Sometimes regular editing isn’t enough.

Sometimes your word count can only be calculated by computers at NASA.

Sometimes you need to mass murder your darlings.

The “editing for length” merit badge is for those times.

Reminder: Check back this weekend for the monthly badge recap & blognouncements!

Part of the merit badges for writers series. The badge may be posted on your site or blog. Tell us why you’ve earned (or will never earn) it in the comments.

I earn this badge time and time again. Assignments often come with max word counts. Not only do I have to murder my darlings, often I have to suffocate subordinate clauses, disconnect cause and effect, and excise multisyllabic words. [Assignments come with word count and reading level restrictions. Assessments for reading level are byzantine at best.]
