Sharing your books.

Merit badge: an octopus tentacle, robot claw, and bear paw exchange books

You love your books—that’s nothing to be ashamed of.

But maybe, just maybe, you used to have a teensy-weensy phobia about what would happen if you let anyone else get within six feet of your personal library.

Fingerprints! Torn pages! Corners folded down! One of your precious babies could even be lost forever!

Then one day, you saw the look of terror in your roommate’s eyes when circumstances forced him to ask if he could look something up in your thesaurus.

And just like that, it was over. You let him borrow it for a week.

Sure, it came back to you with a peanut butter stain on the cover. But you were ultimately happier to have a peanut-buttered book than to live in fear.

The “sharing your books” merit badge is part of the merit badges for readers series. The badge may be posted on your site or blog. Tell us why you’ve earned (or will never earn) it in the comments.

    @Casey: Agreed.

    On a completely unrelated note, this badge got me thinking about someone I knew who had book-borrowing fear from the other side. Had to practically force books (ones they mentioned wanting to read) into his/her hands, he/she was so afraid of damaging what had been borrowed. I think it ended with me more or less saying, “Hurt my books. PLEASE.”

    I’ll never get this badge, never ever!
