Bad news, guys.
The future is going to be terrible.
See, I decided to act all responsible and look up the subject for today’s badge instead of faking my way through. (Fine, the research die made me. The traitor.)
It turns out there are about a jillion things that will probably go wrong and ruin our lives in the next 10–800,691 years.
I bet even the stuff from the dystopia stories that took place in the past will still find a way go wrong. Including the things that don’t make sense due to modern advancements or being set in a fantasy world. That’s how screwed we are.
So might as well lock your doors and wait for the inevitable. Kill some time earning your “dystopia” merit badge by reading and/or writing dystopian prophecies fiction. If robots haven’t dragged you off to reeducation camps by then, here’s a craft project to keep you busy until they do. (Click each image for a larger version.)
Been too long since third grade? If you can’t remember how to fold and use this type of fortune-teller (aka “cootie-catcher,” aka “claw”), check out the complete set of instructions!
Part of the merit badges for readers & writers series. The badge may be posted on your site or blog. Tell us why you’ve earned (or will never earn) it in the comments.

I love the barcoded zombie!
I LOVE your blog and badges. You made me happy today. Please feel free to make yourself a good juju merit badge.
Love,
Lola
Coincidently, today’s “Tree Lobsters” comic is about the coming apocalypse(s).
I wish I could get this one for writing. I’m trying to write a Cyberpunk short story and as easy as it is for me to see the future this way, it’s hard to get into that frame of mine when I’m sitting in my nice air conditioned apartment munching on California rolls
Love this. I have a dystopia in me — I even have a general idea of how it goes. There’s a fair bit of writing I want to get to first, though. We’ll see what happens.
The Joke-Bot 5000 is actually a sweetie, huh? Maybe the future won’t be so bad.
I’ve written a dystopian novel, and it’s one of my favorite genres. I’ve actually reviewed a few of my favorite dystopian novels on my blog.
I love your badges!
