I thought I had decided which badge would close out Request Week. I really did. But then Cait asked for “a badge for writing over, under, and around my cat, who thinks getting in the way of the keyboard is a great game.”
And that’s when I realized the following:
- A survey of one area household indicated a shocking pattern. The Desire of Cats to Sit on You While You Work has actually been increasing as the Temperature rises to ever more uncomfortable levels. Statistics don’t lie, people.
- If there is one thing the internet needs more of, it’s cats. Where can you go to find pictures of cats on the internet? Almost nowhere.
So I made the “feline ‘assistance’” merit badge, only to read this article (via Rejectionist) as I was getting ready to post.
And that’s when I realized the following:
- I’d been played.
Touché, cats. Touché.

Meanwhile, this is writing merit badge #50. Cait reported earning 31 badges before this one was even up—is she the record holder? How many have you earned so far, Badger Scouts?
It’s also the end of Request Week. You may continue to make badge suggestions in the old request post if you’d like. All new requests and existing suggestions that haven’t been turned into badges will be saved for a probable future Revenge of Request Week.
Finally, today is the last day to get in on Twitter #badgeimprov. (See Monday’s post.) Sure-to-be-scary results of the game will be posted next week.
This is part of the merit badges for writers series, and may be posted on your site or blog. Have you earned this badge? Will you never earn it? Tell us why in the comments.

I like how it’s an orange cat. Both of mine were acquired while searching for an orange one. This one is going up on the blog like yesterday.
I now have 33. Others are in the works
And this one really is perfect! Chomping on the mouse is a very nice touch!
Okay, that article is creepy. But now I know why I haven’t sent Bitey the Cat packing.
I have eight badges on my blog, and I think I have a couple more that I can put up but haven’t yet. Others are goals! And then there’s the kitty badge. As both cats are in their customary and perhaps pathology-inducing places right next to me, I’m taking this one, too.
Cait, congrats on all the badges! How about a list, so we can all better marvel at your merity awesomeness!
Mine are: Worldbuilding, Outlining, Backing Up Your Work, Writer’s Block, Blank Page Conqueror, Flow, Irony, and Write Place.
Thanks Casey!
And sure thing – here they are:
Wearing a Merit Badge, Flying by the Seat of Your Pants, Outlining, Adverb Slayer, Flash Fiction, Proofreading, Worldbuilding, Backing Up Your Work, Young Writer, Dialogue, Namer of Things, Voracious Reader, Not An Oprah’s Book Club Selection, Speedy Writer, Spelling, Brilliant Idea, Realism, Accepting Criticism, Social Networking, E-Book, Writer’s Block, Blank Page Conqueror, Punctuation, Flow, I know what irony is, but I don’t have to be a jerk about it, Know Your Rights, Fictional Cartography, Write Place, BICHOK, Typing, Writing By Hand, Finished First Draft, and Feline “Assistance.”
Whew!
@Alicia: I’ve never found an orange one, but an orange one’s definitely found me.
@Casey: OBEY BITEY.
@Cait: You keep this up and we’re going to have to start stocking table runners as badge sashes in the gift shop.
Em, you may just have to do that! I have my eye on several others ; )
Oh, so awesome, Cait! You have so many! Some are badges I *want* — like First Draft — and there are others I’ll never earn (and that’s okay). I think I am most impressed by Social Networking. Or E-Book. Or maybe Adverb Slayer. OR MAYBE ALL OF THEM! Great job!
(And wait — there’s a Voracious Reader Badge? How did I overlook that?)
Em: Bitey is He Who Must Be Obeyed. So no worries there.
Is it OK to apply this to graphic designer/writers? My 23-lb cat Zander made a gracious offer to hold down the scanner lid for me, even when I wasn’t using it.
End result? Pre-warmed feline ready for lap occupation, and a scanner that no longer scanned in focus.
@Jeanne B.: Yes, absolutely! My cat is less than 23 pounds, but she loves to sleep on the scanner and would have a thing or two to do to me if I said “no” (to you or to her).
This was the first of the badges that I came across on a blog somewhere, and I thought it was absolutely adorable. I had to have it. I even have a red cat. He likes to lie on my hands when I try to type.
Thank you for making those badges! They are absolutely brilliant. I posted some on my blog (with a link back to you of course).
