Second rejection.

Merit badge: two thumbs down

Okay, so you got one rejection. Anybody can do that.

Getting two rejections, on the other hand, means you didn’t let the first rejection crush you. You kept trying.

Or maybe you just sent out a bunch of submissions at once and got more than one rejection back. Let’s not dwell on technicalities. Take the “second rejection” merit badge and act courageous, okay?

Note: This badge was specifically inspired by the I Should Be Writing episode that sent me down this merit badges for writers path in the first place.

This is part of the merit badges for writers series, and may be posted on your site or blog. Have you earned this badge? Will you never earn it? Tell us why in the comments.

    Getting rejected is bad.

Getting rejected by Mickey Mouse is that much worse…

I had no idea he was in the publishing business until I saw this post. ;-)

@Hillary—the mouse is everywhere . He represents one of the world’s largest children’s publishers and reaches more than 100 million readers each month, offering books and magazines in 55 languages in 74 countries. This is why Em can only offer a finite number of rejection badges. There is only a finite (read small) number of publishers left in the world.

Are the Mouse hands a little . . . commentary? As in, only someone as silly as MM would reject my brilliant work? (I kid!)

Love the badge. I’m coming back for all of these when I get the the submission stage. It will be the tiny silver lining, something to look forward to as the rejections roll in.

FOR THE RECORD, THESE ARE GENERIC CARTOON HANDS WHICH ARE LEGALLY DISTINCT FROM ANY HIGHLY PROTECTED CARTOON RODENT PROPERTIES WITH AN ABUNDANCE OF LAWYERS.

Em, when I look at your badge I see GENERIC CARTOON HANDS . . . with *maybe* the barest, faintest, subtlest hint of GENERIC CARTOON SATIRE, just around the edges. For the record.
