Murder your darlings.

Merit Badge: poisoning a cupcake

Aw, look at you. You’re Mommy’s special Turn Of Phrase, aren’t you? Yes, you are!

I know a mother is supposed to love all her children equally. But just between you and me, TOP, you’ve been my favorite since the moment I typed you into the word processor. Even before that, to be honest. Since the very moment you were conceived, I was determined to find a place for you in this manuscript.

And now look at you! You’re so witty and poignant and original. Readers will see you and know I loved you best of all. You radiate so much of Mommy’s love that you outshine all your brothers and sisters.

So much love that you kind of… stick out like a sore thumb.

Oh.

Oh, TOP.

My dear, sweet TOP.

I’m so sorry, but Mommy needs to earn a merit badge now.

Whenever you feel an impulse to perpetrate a piece of exceptionally fine writing, obey it—whole-heartedly—and delete it before sending your manuscript to press. Murder your darlings.
Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch

The “murder your darlings” merit badge is part of the writers series, and may be posted on your site or blog. Have you earned this badge? Will you never earn it? Tell us why in the comments.

Okay I might earn this one later, not there yet. But between the summary and the Badge itself. Well they both made my laugh. Well done!

@DQuartermane: Left me with a strange desire to watch The Bad Seed, though.

Not familiar with that one. Will have to check it out. Kinda reminded me a bit of Arsnic & Old Lace now that I think about it.
