Shark bait.

Merit badge: shark chomping a query letter

Only those writers brave enough to swim with the Query Shark earn the “shark bait” merit badge. Just make sure you follow the directions before submitting your query, or there might not be a big enough piece of you left to wear the badge…

Thanks to Janet Reid, the most benevolent killer shark on the Net, for giving the go-ahead for this badge.

This is part of the merit badges for writers series, and may be posted on your site or blog. Have you earned this badge? Will you never earn it? Tell us why in the comments.

    Okay,
    I admit I am a bit behind on my badges but I must say this one and the Oprah badge are great! A couple of things to just throw out there.

    1. Does Voracious Reader count for Podiobooks/Audiobooks?

    2. And I am not sure which to get on the young writer as in they both kinda work for me. I am a bit younger but didn’t really start writing till recently. Not sure which to pick but leaning toward older cuz you mentioned started late.

    @DQuartermane:

    1. I don’t see why not. Or at least it works until there’s a “voracious listener” badge. (No plans for such a badge currently exist.)

    2. The standard Merit Badger rule applies: if you honestly believe you’ve earned a badge, then you’ve earned it. That being said, it’s certainly possible for one person to earn both of those badges. Though it might require a little patience and/or a time machine to do so.

    3. If anyone wants to loan me their time machine, I can make it so plans for a “voracious listener” merit badge currently exist. That’s all I want it for. Honest.

    Hey Em,
    Duly Noted about the Merit Badger rule. (Probably going with Mature Writer btw). And If I had a key to the TARDIS, I would so give you one for the awesomeness here.

    But darn it if The Doctor won’t get back to me about that tour he promised me of the TARDIS…

    Yes, I merit the badge. I even have a shark with rhinestones on it that says shark bait.

    Second, I once stood Miss Janet up at a query workshop. She sent lots of people who knew me out with dire threats. Yes, I did and lived to tell the tale, but I had to get down on my knees in front of a room full of shocked people and beg her forgiveness.

    @Christi: You’re welcome!

    @Julie: And she let you keep both the knees?!

    Man, I got eaten alive by the shark. Came out of the thing with my head and a pinky toe. But, I did it. I was #191- and she said YES!
    So.. I would like to formally request the badge of honor- so that I may display it proudly.
