You may be following your Muse, but why tempt the Fates?
Hard drives crash. Lightning strikes. Cats knock over coffee cups.
Do the responsible thing and earn the “backing up your work” merit badge. You can make photocopies, save versions to online storage, use USB drives, whatever. Just don’t lose my future favorite novel, okay?
Art note: Someday, a new object will replace the outmoded 3.5″ floppy disk as the universal “save” symbol. That day is not today.
This is part of the merit badges for writers series. Have you earned this badge? Tell us why in the comments and post the badge on your website or blog.

lord do i ever back up. i have a half-terabyte external drive now. and i have an account at dropbox. i also make dvd backups still.
i lost an entire hard drive in september 2006. i lost everything. pictures of my kids. pictures of my late cat. music. MY WRITING. i had my writing backed up — unfortunately i’d not backed it up since March. that still makes me sick to my stomach.
so now i go to extremes. lol
another button for my row. yay! ROFL
Yay another badge for my blog!
Honestly I have been bad about backing up my work but with the awesomeness that is dropbox I just uploaded a back up of my WIP there.
(I say this in a silly fashion, with dropbox taking over perhaps it should be the new storage icon)
Dear Sister points out that maybe we can get away with the floppy symbol a little longer.
I have come back for this one! After my big-word-count day today, I felt extra motivated to make a back up. Now I need to work out a regular schedule for it.
@Casey: You are 5,218 kinds of awesome.
